Effective Usage: How To Configure Your System To Trade Storage

Introduction
A major advantage of Wuala is the ability to trade local storage from your own computer for additional online storage on Wuala. In order for you to do this, your computer needs to be online for at least 17% of the time (4 hours a day), your Internet connection needs to have a 10KB/s uploading rate, and your computer needs to be able to receive data from other computers.

IP-Port
In order to allow incoming connections of UDP-Packets you may need to configure the IP-Port Wuala is using. Since Wuala is not using a standard port, the client chooses a random port when starting Wuala for the first time. If you want to use a specific port, you may do so. Go to Tools > Options > Connection (Win/Linux) or Wuala > Preferences > Connection (Mac) and edit the field 'Local Port'. Please restart Wuala after having adjusted the settings.

Firewalls & Routers
If you are running a firewall, you may need need to open this port in order to trade storage. Furthermore, if your system is behind a router, you need to open that port for incoming UDP-connections and forward the traffic to the LAN-IP of your computer. Wuala will try to do this automatically via UPNP. If Wuala succeeds, you will have 'Connection type A: Full reachability'. In case your router does not support UPNP, you can open the port and configure port forwarding to your router. Please refer to the manual of your router.
